Classes

IRISH DANCE IS FOR EVERYONE - ALL AGES AND ETHNICITIES

Beginners classes start from as young as age 3 while our adult classes for fitness and laughs are also well attended.

While many girls are drawn to Irish dance, boys love it too and enjoy the physicality of the hard shoe dances as their skills increase.

The journey for an Irish Dancer is long and full of challenges along the way to keep it interesting. For many, competing in and winning Championships becomes the goal, but enduring friendships, key life skills and personal confidence is the real reward.

Beginners

The aim of beginners classes is to introduce dancers to the fundamental skills of Irish Dance in a fun, engaging way.

Beginners classes are held weekly for half an hour and dancers learn the basic reel, soft-shoe jig and first hard-shoe dance. By the end of their first year, most beginners will be able to perform at their first competition (feis).

Separate beginners classes for boys are also available.

Championships

Championship classes are for dancers who have completed beginner stage and want to challenge themselves through the competitive ranks, from small local Feis through to the New Zealand National Championships.

All championships dancers learn at least 3 solo dances per year and also join competitive Ceili (group dance) teams. The combination of solo and team dancing gives dancers the ability to challenge themselves individually but also learn the fundamentals of team work - and make great life-long friendships.

ReelJig Junior, Intermediate and Senior class groups are set based on age and ability.  All championship dancers are required to attend classes twice a week, and at least 3 times per week prior to the NZ National Championships at the end of term 3.

Many championship dancers travel 2-3 times per year to other New Zealand and International Feis. This helps to motivate and  grow their competitiveness, and enriches the whole dancing and cultural experience.
